4 c. all purpose flour
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 lb. butter, room temperature
2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. baking soda
1 t. salt
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 c. raisins

Combine, flour, sugar, butter, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center and add egg and butter milk. Mix well with a wooden spoon. Blend in the raisins and knead til smooth (about 2-3 minutes). Form into 1 large round loaf or 2 medium loaves. Place on a buttered cookie sheet, cut a cross on top, and brush with a beaten egg white. Bake the soda bread at 375° for 35-40 minutes or til well browned. Cool before slicing
