Place 1 c. white sugar in a hot skillet and caramelize, over medium heat, stirring constantly, til light brown. Pour 1 c. milk and 2 c. sugar in a deep pot. Bring to a gentle boil and stir til the sugar is dissolved. Add the burnt sugar and stir til dissolved. Remove from heat, add 1/2 stick butter and 1 t. vanilla and stir til it is at the consistency desired. Covers and fills 2 layers or a sheet cake.
