RENDERED SUET AND SUET BALLS FOR BIRDS

TO RENDER SUET: cut suet into small chunks and let liquify over medium heat in a saucepan or render in a microwave oven. Pour into small molds, such as an empty can of tuna, and let harden.

SUET BALLS: mix the rendered suet with any or all of the following items: corn meal, oat meal, dried fruits, chopped nuts, 1-2 T. peanut butter, bird seed or other seeds. Mix with liquid suet and let harden. Wrap in a mesh cloth or suet cage and hang in a tree. If you can obtain pine cones dip them in the suet and the birds will love you.
Note: this recipe is only to be used in the winter months as the birds don't need this much fat during the remainder of the year.

Suet Balls for Bird Food recipe is published in our February, 1999 Menu Minder.
