Here I am at what many people would consider ground zero in Napa Valley, the To Kalon vineyard at Robert Mondavi winery in Oakville. Mr. Mondavi is often credited as the person that put Napa Valley back on the map after the demise of the valley during the prohibition era. If you're a Cabernet drinker, Oakville and Rutherford are going to be main areas of interest for you. Don't worry, they make all kinds of other wines too, but the cabs seem to flourish with with sips of envy here. Our appointment for our tour at Mondavi got messed up and it was the end of our visit. We just showed up and got the best we could at the last minute, and let me tell you, that will work just as well for most of us. But I will return for a full visit and some of the wonderful dinners and other special events that are offered at this staid winery of the Napa Valley. I have been collecting Mondavi wines for quite some time and can do verticals of over 10 years with their cabs. They make everything from great daily drinkers to very high end collectable's and I suggest you try whatever you can afford from them.
